FIRST US TOO MEETING, NEW SEASON - TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2001
CAMPUS AUDITORIUM, WILLIAM OSLER HEALTH CENTRE, 7:00 - 9:00 P.M.
BRAMPTON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, 20 LYNCH STREET, BRAMPTON, ONTARIO.
HEALTHY EATING TO REDUCE CANCER
Our first speaker for the new season, and back by popular demand, is Tanya
Giaguinto, B.A., B.A. Sc. R.D. Tanya, a clinical dietitian and nutrition expert,
was here in 2000 and her discussion was appreciated by the membership.
WHAT'S AHEAD?
It looks like we have a very interesting season ahead with excellent speakers
planned for the balance of 2001. Oncologist Dr. Sehdev has accepted our invite
to appear at our October 9th meeting and for our November 13th meeting, Dr. M.
Milosevic, a Radiation Oncologist from Princess Margaret Hospital, is confirmed.
For December or early 2002, and to change to a lighter note, a retired sports
star might appear. Stay tuned.
NEW MEMBERS
During July and August the new member meetings were held in the auditorium. As
it turned out we needed the space, as we had eight new members in July and five
in August. Several couples joined the new member committee: Marg & Sean Butterly,
Vic & Pat Henderson and Sam & Barbara Thomas. For the list of names of the 17
new members for the summer months, please see the new member section of our web
site.
AWARENESS PROGRAM (From Ian Smith Coordinator)
"A second awareness campaign is planned for the Wal-Mart store at Hwy10/Bovaird
location. We are seeking volunteers for a couple of hours from 10:00 am until
4:00 pm Saturday 22nd September. Don't be shy about approaching people as they
leave the store - we need your help to get our message across. Please be ready
to offer your services at the first regular meeting in September when we shall
arrange individual time slots for each volunteer.
We have received a generous supply of flyers from both AstraZeneca and the
Cancer Society and expect to receive a further supply of the booklet
specifically for the ladies entitled "For Women Who Care". Our current stock of
brochures will enable us to supply every pharmacy in Brampton (51 in all) with
information.
There is to be a presentation to the combined Brampton councils of the
Knights of Columbus on 22nd November. We expect around 75 to 80 people in the
audience and again, this will be a major event. Earlier in November your
coordinator will make a presentation to Brampton GoodLife Fitness Club. This
latter event may be quite small, but may still generate some interest that may
become apparent later on.
Finally, the Awareness Coordinator welcomes your comments and ideas for
possible future campaigns. Let's here from you!". (Editors Note: September 17 -
23 is prostate cancer awareness week. Don't let Ian & Sean do it all alone.
Volunteers can call Ian at 905 - 454 - 3880, after 6:00 pm or on weekends.)
GOLF DAY UPDATE
Judging by the feedback we have received, we had a very successful golf
tournament. In addition, we raised over $1,000 for our treasury for prostate
cancer awareness. Would you like this to be an annual tournament?
GOLF SHIRTS
We are now taking orders for golf shirts. Our cost for the shirts is $35, but
the cost to our members is $30. Anyone wearing a shirt is automatically doing
P.R. for US TOO - Brampton. Some members have ordered shirts, but did not
indicate their size. Please see me at the meeting if you are still interested.
MEMBERSHIP
We now have 138 members. It has become increasingly difficult to provide all
desirable services to you with our current steering committee. Due to the
increased workload, a few sick members have even gone unnoticed and unvisited.
We desperately need help in all areas of the chapter. If you would like to
donate some of your time in any capacity, please contact Fred or any committee
member. Your experience is invaluable to us.
US TOO - Brampton cares about all existing and prospective members. If you
need help or just want to talk, please let a steering or telephone committee
member know. We now have veterans of just about every available treatment.
Gerry Brunjes has asked me to remind you that your $10 membership fee is now
due. There will be no charge for coffee this year, but a box will be available
for donations.
Your master of ceremonies for the evening will be Doug Hancock, filling in
for your vacationing chairman. Enjoy your cruise, Fred & Ivy Norris, you deserve
it.
Please come and enjoy the evening.
