"With The Snap of a Glove"
Prostate Cancer is the number one cancer for Canadian men. 1 in 6 of
us will be diagnosed with this disease and it is on the rise. If
detected and treated in its earliest stages, the chances of successful
treatment is 90%. I hope by writing this book and telling my story
that I will be able to increase awareness to a much higher level by
telling one man’s story of the fight and survival. We can take this
disease on face to face and the answer is simple....early detection..!

Winning the Battle Against
Prostate Cancer by
Dr. Chodak MD
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men with almost
200,000 new cases being diagnosed each year. Today increasing numbers
of men and their families play a more active role in their treatment
and the results can be seen in the increase of men who survive
prostate cancer. Yet each over 27,000 men die from prostate cancer.
This makes prostate cancer the second leading cause of cancer death in
men behind lung cancer.
The range of controversial therapies and treatments for
prostate cancer is greater than that of any other cancer
affecting men. This makes it difficult for men and their
families to determine what are the best options available.
Rarely do doctors agree on which treatment a patient
should receive or when they should receive it. And many of
the current books on prostate cancer suffer from
considerable bias promoting one treatment over another
without good scientific evidence.
Winning the Battle Against Prostate Cancer
resolves the problem of contradictory and incomplete
information. The book is an unbiased and up-to-date look
at prostate cancer treatments and therapies. Dr. Chodak
lays out the pros and cons of all reasonable treatment
options including the chances that a man may have a good
result or develop side effects or complications.

Prostate Cancer:
A guide for patients by Dr. Laurence Klotz, Coles Notes
Medical Series, Prospero Books, 2000, paperback, 164 pages, $12.95
ISBN: 0774006099 Based on the premise that there are almost always options in the
treatment of prostate cancer, this book is decision-oriented, with a
minimum of story telling. The author encourages men, as well as their
family members, to be involved in the process of tackling the disease
– right from the first screening test to choices of therapy. Dr. Klotz is particularly good at giving simple yet vivid
descriptions of the science at work in prostate cancer. You come away
with a clear picture of what’s happening at each stage of cancer
growth – from understanding the cellular mechanics that make up the
prostate to how the gland’s cancer interacts physically and chemically
with the rest of the body. He also offers a frank discussion on the
odds of recovery, taking into account the cancer’s stage, its progress
and which treatment options apply. – Our Voice, Spring,
2001. Recommended by Dr. David Evans.

Prostate Cancer:
All you need to know to take an active part in your treatment
by Dr. S. Larry Goldenberg and Dr. Ian M. Thompson, Intelligent
Patient Guide, 3rd edition, 2001, paperback, 269 pages, $24.95 ISBN:
0969612559
Now in its third printing, this book expands with each new edition.
The authors provide a lot of detail, covering every aspect of the
diagnostic, treatment and recovery experience. Graphic illustrations
offer a good look at the types of instruments and equipment you're
likely to encounter in the hospital.
Dr. Goldenberg and Dr. Thompson have a solid handle on predicting what
patients are thinking and feeling. One of the strengths of the book
lies in their stories about patients who choose varying treatments or
have different perspectives on their situation. A chapter on
alternative and complementary therapies also gives a very useful
explanation of dietary supplements. Our Voice, Spring,
2001. Recommended by Dr. David Evans.
