Brampton/Caledon/Georgetown/Dufferin County
As in the past Us Too! Brampton entered an 8 member
team in the
annual Relay For Life, operated by the Canadian
Cancer Society.
2004 marks Brampton/Caledon/Georgetown/Dufferin County Unit's
fifth annual Relay For Life.
A word about the relay: The Relay For Life is a 12-hour,
non-competitive relay.
It is a celebration of survivors and a tribute to the lives of loved ones.
It's an evening of fun, entertainment, friendship and fundraising to beat
cancer.
Relay For Life involves teams of co-workers, families and friends who
take turns walking or running around a track. Teams each receive a
campsite
and creativity is encouraged with prizes awarded to the best-decorated
campsites.
To top it off there is great food, camaraderie and entertainment available
throughout.
This year's Relay was held at the Brampton Fairgrounds.
Thousands
of participants came from all walks of life and they came from
everywhere - from all over Ontario, from other parts of Canada,
from across the border and some from overseas. They camped,
they held hands, they sang and they walked. RVs and tents dotted
the grounds. Music and activities went non-stop all night long.
There was no stemming the enthusiasm, the solidarity
and the
camaraderie that night. Ignoring the unusually chilly temperatures
walkers walked and runners ran, young and old, children and dogs,
all fired by an unwavering spirit that bore testimony to their fight
against cancer. And go on all night they did - right on to 7:00 am
closing the next day!
Our Relay team and other Us Too members
enjoyed the Survivor's
Reception, the Opening Ceremony and took turns walking and
participating in many other activities. They were
cheered as they
walked the "Survivor's Victory Lap".
The Us Too Brampton banner, prominent at our camp
site beside the track, signified our solidarity and support.
The group lit luminaries and joined in silent tribute
for
those of our members who have sadly passed away.
Our plaque "Prostate Cancer Kills, Awareness Can Save",
conveyed our mission, from within the luminaries circle.
Bruce and Josh, who entertained us at our June Pot
luck,
were amongst the performers for the evening at the event.
They soon had kids of all ages joining hands and dancing.
So well liked was their performance they will likely make an
appearance at next year's event.
Our Chairman, Fred Norris, delivered a speech heard by
thousands
on the ground. His speech was immensely well received.
Fred is one of the rare individuals to have been invited
from a chapter to address the crowd at this event.
Us Too- Brampton can feel proud of this recognition.
We acknowledge the support and thank the event organizers.
As before our team captain Jim Dorsey did a marvelous job
of rallying together our Relay for Life team, collecting pledges,
organizing luminaries and leading our participation at the event.
Us Too! Brampton team captain :
Jim Dorsey
Kudos and Thanks to Jim for a job well done! And thanks
to all
the volunteers, the Relay team and to all those who helped.
