US TOO MEETING - TUESDAY OCTOBER 9, 2001
CAMPUS AUDITORIUM, WILLIAM OSLER HEALTH CENTRE, 7:00 - 9:00 P.M.
BRAMPTON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, 20 LYNCH STREET, BRAMPTON, ONTARIO.
SPEAKER - ONCOLOGIST DR. S. SEHDEV
Our speaker for the evening will discuss hormone therapy. Dr. Sehdev is
also very knowledgeable about "P.C. SPES" alternative therapy. Have your
questions ready.
HEALTHY EATING TO REDUCE CANCER
Our first speaker of the new season was Tanya Giaguinto, a clinical
dietitian and nutrition expert from the Sunnybrook Health Centre. Close to
60 members, wives and guests enjoyed the evening despite the tragic events
of the day. We plan to have a nutrition question box at meetings. Tanya
has agreed to answer our questions.
WHAT'S AHEAD?
We have a very interesting season ahead with excellent speakers planned
for the balance of 2001. For our November meeting, Dr. M. Milosevic, a
Radiation Oncologist from Princess Margaret Hospital, is confirmed. For
December or early 2002, on a lighter note, a retired sports star may be
available. Stay tuned.
NEW MEMBERS
Our new member procedure has been revised slightly. We now have separate
meeting nights for new members. They will be held on Thursday October
11th, Wednesday November 14th, and Wednesday December 12th in the
Auditorium. Any new members arriving on a regular meeting night will be
registered, given a kit and asked to attend the next new member meeting.
However, counselors will also be available after our regular meetings to
answer questions.
Manuel Leal and Cyril Vassall were added in September. Do we have a member
who speaks Portuguese? If so, please let me know at the October meeting or
by phone.
AWARENESS PROGRAM
A second awareness campaign at the Wal-Mart store at Hwy10/Bovaird
location was a complete success and spearheaded our participation in
Prostate Cancer Awareness week. Coordinator Ian Smith has asked me to
thank the volunteers: Murray Laidlaw, Doug Hancock, Byron Wynter, Morris
Rambout, Jim Dorsey and your communications officer, who was along for the
ride. We completely exhausted our supply of literature, which we had
received from AstraZeneca and the Canadian Cancer Society. Ian also
arranged for every drug store in the Brampton area to have awareness
literature available. He is now working on other drug stores in the
Brampton area - Bolton, Orangeville etc. The goal of US TOO - Brampton is
to have a continuing awareness program, not just a week once a year. Ian
is the driving force behind this effort.
A ROOM SOMEWHERE
Your finance officer, Gerry Brunjes, has been attempting to find us a
room, an office, a clubhouse, a meeting place for members or just a place
for US TOO - Brampton to call home. The idea is not new; there are similar
rooms at Princess Margaret Hospital and in a church for the Ottawa support
group. Gerry has done a remarkable job and he may well have found us a
home. If this does happen, we will need funds for office furniture,
computers, supplies etc. and most importantly, volunteers to operate it.
How many of you would be willing to spend four hours a week as an US TOO
representative? What are your thoughts about all this? Can you help in any
way?
PRINCESS MARGARET VISIT
Five volunteers, Gerry Brunjes, Frank Connolly, Jim Dorsey, Don Grant and
Vic Henderson attended an Information Solutions workshop for prostate
cancer at Princess Margaret Hospital. An important section (Jewels or
Junk) addressed the usefulness of the internet as a resource on prostate
cancer for the patient. Heading up the program was Dr. Joyce Nyhof-Young,
while Dr. Barbara Soren moderated the actual focus group. Our members
found the morning very informative, and hopefully we provided the doctors
with some useful data.
MEMBERSHIP-
US TOO - Brampton cares about all existing and prospective members. If you
need help or just want to talk, please let a telephone or steering
committee member know. We now have veterans of just about every available
treatment. We are thinking about having a discussion group called
Hand-in-Hand, which would take place at 9 o'clock in the auditorium, right
after our regular meetings. Your comments would be appreciated.
Gerry Brunjes has asked me to remind you that
your $10 membership fee is now due. There will be no charge for coffee
this year, but all donations are appreciated. A special thank you to Doug
& Shirley Hancock for filling in for the vacationing chairman Fred Norris
and hostess Helen Gardiner.
TO OUR NEIGHBORS, FRIENDS, AND RELATIVES SOUTH
OF THE BORDER, YOU ARE IN OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.
