Last Meeting - OCTOBER 10, 2006 – LAURA NATALE – YOGA & PERSONAL HEALTH

This interactive Yoga session, conducted by Laura and her associate Sandeep, was attended by around 45 members, wives and guests. Laura shared her own journey and how through Yoga she had regained her own health in areas where mainstream medicine had failed her. Laura went on to explain the health benefits of different Yoga positions, while her associate Sandeep demonstrated the particular postures. The degree of flexibility and control demonstrated and the astonishing grace with which these complex moves were performed, as visible in the picture sequence on our web-site: http://www.ustoo-brampton.com, shows what can be achieved through Yoga.

Following the demonstration Laura and Sandeep jointly conducted some simple yoga exercises where all the members could participate. The presentation concluded with a Guided Relaxation Visualization session using soft and soothing music. The de-stressing and the 'good-feelings' resulting from the experience were felt and appreciated by all. Handouts, showing various Yoga poses, were distributed to those who were interested.

Laura has subsequently offered us a few alternative natural health topics for our future meetings. In addition she has put together a Beginner's Yoga class specially for Us Too! Brampton members.

Suggested times are: Thursday evening 7:30 to 9:00 and Saturday afternoon 2:30 to 4:30.

Those interested to join should contact:

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

A big thank you to all the people who supported our theatre night. Surprisingly, over 50 tickets were picked up at the door. A few had been put aside, but several people just showed up. We are entering discussions with a member of the hospital board to see if there is any room for our organization in the new hospital. As you are aware, the major hospitals Princess Margaret and Sunnybrook already have these facilities. When we tried to get the same at Peel Memorial we couldn’t get to first base, so maybe there will be better consideration this time.
Awareness is the principal reason we exist, along with helping the newly diagnosed. We have been approached to do another awareness session on the 30th November at the BMW facility. I am told there are approximately 450 employees to deliver our message to. This month's speaker will be offering an insight into how research is being funded and the importance of its continuance.

Finance
Awareness is our business, is it not? As presumably intelligent members of this society, we band together in order to obtain knowledge of our common problem and to impart our own experiences with the hope in mind of defeating the enemy, prostate cancer. So, having said that, what are we doing about it? First and foremost we encourage you to talk about it. After all, communication is the life blood of awareness. Next we need to put our message where it can be easily seen by patients and interested adults, such as in doctors offices and hospital waiting lounges. Speaking of hospitals, we may have a window of opportunity with the new Brampton Hospital, but like most things it needs determination and the backing of money. We have been able to arrange a meeting later this month with the new hospital administration to discuss our needs, and likely theirs. We shall see.

Many of you are perhaps wondering how we made out at the annual Theatre Night last week.

Not bad, but certainly a somewhat missed window of opportunity to add significant dollars to our treasury for the aforementioned awareness proposal. Figure wise, you accounted for 176 tickets sold, or $2,640.00. Our thanks and gratitude to those who helped in this endeavor.

Our hope is to obtain a reasonable spot in the new hospital where we can advertise our business, awareness and information, and encourage PCa patients and their families to at least talk to US TOO!. Well, so far we have possibly managed to add enough capital to our treasury to support a wall or shelving. We will have a better idea next month. Dr. Flax, who supports us 100%, suggests furniture in the waiting room that PCa patients would use. Such items could advertise US TOO! of course. But conjecture is just that, conjecture. What we need are some determined efforts with our fund raising for awareness. ANY IDEAS?

A Changing Of The Guard
The October Newsletter was my last as Editor. This Newsletter has been created by Gary Foote, who has taken over as Editor, so that I can move on to other Us Too! projects. Gary is one of our newest and younger members but he has quickly become a very active member. He joined the Steering Committee, took over distribution of the Newsletter last spring and walked in the 2006 Relay for Life with his two daughters. He will do a great job as Newsletter Editor. Please support him in his efforts to keep the Newsletter coming and to improve it in the months to come.

Our Newest Project – Calling Car Crazy Members and Partners
It is our intention to hold a car cruise in support of Prostate Cancer Awareness and Research. This event, to be called “Cruisin for a Cure Canada”, will be modeled on the highly successful Cruisin for a Cure created by Debbie Baker of Orange County, California.

I attended the 7th edition in Costa Mesa on September 23rd and worked at the Testing Van on Friday night and Saturday.

The statistics were amazing: 3,400+ custom, classic and special interest cars & trucks were on display, 25,000+ admission tickets were sold, $279,000 was raised for Prostate Cancer research at UCL and most importantly - 970 men received free PSA tests and/or DRE examinations.

I witnessed many men dragging their friends in to be tested and as always there were still men whose wives had to do everything but give blood to get their husbands tested. It was an amazing experience, but nobody was embarrassed and everybody KNEW why they were there.

Debbie’s inspiration was to get a lot of men in one location having fun with their friends and their favourite toys and use the opportunity to introduce them to the very serious topic of Prostate Cancer. Her results have been amazing and ours will be as well - with your help.If you are Car Crazy or if you know others who are, come on out and get involved.

See http://www.cruisinforacure.com/ for the California site.
If you have a High Speed Internet connection, watch Debbie Baker being interviewed at the 5th Cruisin for a Cure in 2004 by Barry Meguiar for his Car Crazy television show at http://www.carcrazycentral.com/cc_tv.aspx?contentid=661
