NEXT US TOO MEETING - TUESDAY, MAY 8, 2001
CAMPUS AUDITORIUM, WILLIAM OSLER HEALTH CENTRE, 7:00 - 9:00 P.M.
BRAMPTON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, 20 LYNCH STREET, BRAMPTON, ONTARIO.
TWO FOR ONE
Don't miss this month's meeting, we have two speakers on the same night.
Urologist Jack Ward will discuss hormonal treatment for a rising PSA and how
Etobicoke is adjusting to amalgamation. In addition, we will be honoured to have
the Canadian Prostate Cancer Network chairman Curtis LeGrow who will say a few
words and answer questions. Ontario Coordinator Derek Lawrence and members from
the Mississauga support group will also be our guests.
WANT YOUR BULLETIN VIA E-MAIL?
Most bulletins this month were sent via Canada Post, but once again, we are
experimenting with e-mail. Member Jim Dorsey, a semi-retired computer expert,
has offered to help. Between the two of us we will send this notice to those who
have an e-mail address as well. Let us know if you have recently obtained an
e-mail address.
APRIL MEETING
Our speaker for the evening was Lori Quinn Kelly a retired R.N. from Halton.
Lori gave us an excellent presentation on how to cope with the emotional side
of cancer. After coffee we divided up into groups by name tag colour and
discussed our common problems.
WHAT'S AHEAD?
Our fiscal year ends on June 12th with a Ladies' Appreciation Night and potluck
get-together. For that night we will break up into discussion groups by nametag
colour with the first two/three tables dedicated to the ladies. The "mike" will
be on if the ladies or anyone else would like to say something. The second part
of the evening will be our potluck meal. I will circulate a "what to bring note"
at the May 8th meeting, so we don't all bring dessert.
NEW MEMBERS
Joining our group this month from our regular April 10th meeting, were Ken &
Jean Bamford, Colin & Emelia Cousens, Otto & Herta Hajek, Graham & Hazel
Hancock and George Redmond. In addition, new member coordinator Alec Gardiner
interviewed Ennio & Audrey Rigo and Ed & Carol Simpson in his home on April
21st. We have a very dedicated coordinator. The next new member meeting will be
Tuesday, May 8th in the small meeting room adjacent to the hospital auditorium,
beginning at 6:00 p.m. All future new member meetings will be held in this room
on the same night as our regular meetings.
AWARENESS PROGRAM
Chairman Fred Norris and an awareness team of Alec Gardiner, Ian Smith and Don
Grant gave a presentation to 28 " Assure Health Management" nurses in the Bell
Canada building in Mississauga. Fred spoke to the nurses about the history of
prostate cancer support groups, about our roles to help newly diagnosed men and
their families, and our increasing participation in the awareness field. Alec
Gardiner gave a detailed talk on our new member program and the various
treatment options. A question-and-answer session followed. The nurses appeared
to enjoy the hour-long presentation and took all copies of our literature to
read and forward to their clients. It is our goal to hold more sessions to make
the public aware that this disease can be cured if caught in its early stages.
Awareness coordinator Ian Smith has confirmed an information table at Wal-Mart
(Hwy.10 at Bovaird) on May 26th. Ian is also working on Snelgrove market (June
or July); Wal-Mart airport Rd./Queen St. in August and our annual booth at
Shoppers World in Brampton in September. OUR AWARENESS PROGRAM NEEDS YOUR
HELP. Ian is still looking for volunteers to hand out literature on
these dates. This is your chance to help others and make them aware of the
disease. It's only for a couple of hours.
GOLF DAY
The golf committee has finalized our MONDAY JUNE 25TH fund raising
golf tournament by selecting ACTON GOLF CLUB as this year's
location. The cost of
the shotgun, scramble format tournament will be $50:00 per golfer which includes
green fees, power cart, balls, prizes and a barbecue luncheon. The two-item
barbecue consists of any two of a hamburger, hot dog, sausage or chicken,
several types of salads, coffee and dessert. This in my estimation is a
fantastic deal for a day of fun and it's for a good cause. Tickets will be
available at our May 8th meeting. Barbecue only price is $13:00. If you would
like to donate prizes for the tournament, please see Morris Rambout, John Giroux
or myself.
We are still working on the golf shirt idea and expect to have more information
for our June bulletin.
FUNDS
A special thank you to the employees of the Bank of Montreal, Bramalea Rd.
branch, for a sizable donation to our treasury. This donation comes from their
Fountain Of Hope foundation.
MEMBERSHIP
Our membership has now exceeded 120. It has become increasing difficult to
provide the service to you the members with our current steering committee. We
could really use some help in all areas of the chapter. If you would like to
donate some time to the group in any capacity, please contact Fred or any
committee member. Margaret Butterly and Jim Dorsey have recently decided to join
our group.
YOUR HEALTH
The larger membership has also allowed some sick members to go unnoticed.
Believe me, US TOO - Brampton cares about our members. If you are having
problems, please let a telephone or steering committee member know. There are
now experts in the membership for just about every treatment. At our June
meeting, the "mike" is yours if you have any ideas that you would like convey to
your fellow members?
Enjoy the evening,
Don Grant - Communications
