"Brachytherapy for Prostate Cancer:
Who should consider it and why"

An audience
of around 45 members, wives attended this very informative
talk by Dr. Juanita Crook.
Dr. Juanita Crook's talk dealt with the very interesting
subject of brachytherapy,
who should be considering it and why. She described how data such as the
PSa,
gleason score and staging etc. was used to decide the risk groups and to
determine
the best treatment options for a given patient. She went into details of
the selection
factors for brachytherapy discussing the quality of life issues related to
how
brachytherapy compared with various other treatments options. Her talk
covered
the type of radiation used in brahytherapy, the types of seeds used, their
half life,
their implantation techniques and and how they worked.
Dr. Crook explained that brachytherapy had been around
since the late 1980s and
went on to present long term outcomes comparing the results with the other
treatments,
the effect of age and some of the side effects and how they were
managed. She also
covered several FAQs touching amongst others areas such PSa kinetics,
radiation safety and PSa 'bounce' following brachytherapy. The talk
concluded with
a summary of key Brachyterapy advantages and side effects.
The talk was easily understood and highly appreciated by audience - the
presentation
slides being rich in graphics, X-ray images and graphical data together
with Dr. Crook's
crisp and easy to follow explanations.
Following the talk Dr. Crook responding to a host of
interesting questions
from the audience during the Questions and Answer session.

About Dr. Juanita Crook
Dr. Crook is the Head of the PMH/UHN prostate brachytherapy
program. Over 900 men have been
treated in this program since it was established in March 1999. Dr. Crook
was one of the Canadian
pioneers on the use of intermittent androgen suppression for recurrent or
metastatic prostate
cancer, establishing a Phase 2 trial in Ottawa in 1993. She has published
2 book chapters and 2 articles
on the use of brachytherapy for penile cancer and is a world-renowned
authority on this subject.
