NEXT US TOO MEETING - TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13,
2001.
This is your night to take the "mike." We want to hear your survivor
story. If you would like to participate, please let us know. Some
members have already indicated they would take a turn: Bill Loney,
Fred Dalzell, Ian Smith, and Bill Dolighan, and yours truly will get
us started. After coffee we will break into groups by treatment for
discussion, utilizing our new name tags. Come to hear and discuss your
situation with people in the same boat. It should be interesting and
informative.
JANUARY MEETING:
Wasn't that a grand evening! I think it had to be our best
get-together yet.
"No Big Deal?" was a big deal in my estimation. Not only did we make a
lot of
people aware of prostate cancer, but we also raised $772 for prostate
cancer research. This was our first really big adventure into fund-
raising and we have two people to thank: Our own finance officer,
Gerry Brunjes, and the Canadian Cancer Society's Daniela Brancatella,
who worked very hard to pull this off. Your participation is greatly
appreciated.( Was this the first of an annual event?) Our chair Fred
Norris has asked me to convey his thanks to all who participated.
WHAT'S AHEAD:
What can you expect in the coming months? In March you will meet
members of the Canadian Cancer Society - Brampton Caledon Unit. The
new unit head, Theresa Culliton, will introduce Daniela Brancatella
and Sue Short for a presentation on "Relay for Life." From April
through June we hope to have an urologist, an oncologist, a major
company and/or maybe complete our fiscal year in June with a potluck
get-together. Your thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.
NEW MEMBER MEETINGS:
While the play was on, your new member coordinator, Alec Gardiner, was
at the hospital interviewing new members. Joining our group this month
were Bill & Grace Pace, John & Nel Warnaar, and William & Nancy
Burke. The next new member meeting will be Tuesday, February 13th in
the small meeting room adjacent to the hospital auditorium and will
begin at 6:00 p.m. All future new member meetings during 2001 will be
held in the small room on the same night as regular meetings.
NEW COMMITTEES:
As promised in an earlier bulletin, two new committees have sprung up.
Ian Smith will coordinate the Awareness Committee. He will attempt to
set up meetings with companies up to and including our awareness week
in September. Sean Butterly & Mike Loughnan will assist.
I will attempt to again set up a golf tournament. Where this is going
or how big it will be is not known at the moment. Our first committee
meeting will be in February and include volunteers, Frank Connolly,
John Giroux and
Morris Rambout. We have titled this "Golf Fund Raiser." At our last
Steering
Committee meeting it was tabled that maybe our membership would like
golf shirts or sweatshirts with our US TOO - Brampton logo on it. It
looks like we
might have a sponsor here and could reduce our costs considerably to
$20 -$30 a shirt, with batch buying. The Newmarket support group has
shirts.
LIBRARY:
We are in the process of cataloging all our videos, books, tapes, etc.
so they will be available for members. Donations of the Audrey Currie
Newton audiotape to our library would be appreciated; we are down to
two copies. In addition, we have received two copies of a great food
booklet titled "Eating Right for Life." This is a Parkhurst
publication, sponsored by Abbott. However, currently we are unable to
obtain additional copies. Keep your eyes open for copies. We now have
nine copies of a CD-ROM for new members, thanks to new member Vic
Henderson. More on the library next month.
THE WEB SITE:
My English buddy, Peter Dutch, and I would like some input from the
membership on what you would like to see on the web site. Up until now
we have kept it very simple, but hopefully informative. Your thoughts?
FUNDS:
For the second straight year, we have received a large donation from
Jaguar Canada Ltd. A special thanks to past Chairman Tony Parker, who
made this happen. Thirty-four members still owe the $10 annual
membership fee. You
know who you are.
VALENTINE'S MEETING:
Two of your Steering Committee members are celebrating 50 years of
marriage this month. I think Ivy and Ena the wives of chair Fred
Norris and finance officer Gerry Brunjes should be given a medal for
living with these guys that long. Geez, some of us aren't even that
old! Just kidding my friends, congratulations. Enjoy the evening.
