"What Does the Future Hold for
Prostate Cancer Treatment?"

Dr. Michael Jewett, FRCSC, MD

Dr. Jewett made a most informative and interesting presentation to an audience
of around 70 members, wives and guests at this meeting.

The presentation focused on current standards and future forms of treatment
and research into prostate cancer. The questions and answer period,
while somehwhat slow to start off , turned out to be an excellent
one with lots of good questions for Dr. Jewett.

At present the PSA test and Biopsy results form the initial baseline to determine
treatment. If the PSA, Gleason score and Grade of the tumour are
high then Surgery or Focused Beam Radiation are recommended.
For smaller tumours Brachytherapy may be a viable solution.

Research is trying to determine the best approach to an individual’s cancer.
In some cases this may involve a combination of surgery and radiation
treatments for high risk individuals. On the other end of the spectrum many
low risk individuals may be better suited to watchful waiting however a small
number may become high risk at some point. Research is trying to determine
a way to spot those individuals that will respond better to one treatment or another.

Dr. Jewett also discussed Robotic Surgery, HIFU, Chryogenics and other
new forms of treatment. All in all a very informative evening.
We hope to have him back in the future.
